“If you say you understand, I am a little pessimistic. If you say you do not understand, I am a bit more optimistic”

~Thich Nhat Hahn

What we will be covering … Communication missteps, a frequent source of stress in both personal and professional spheres, will be our focus today. Discover the art of speaking to be heard and forging connections through empathetic listening. Our aim: master the dual role of expressing our viewpoints while grasping others' points of view. Effective communication hinges on reducing emotional reactivity and fostering responsive, productive exchanges. Through defensiveness reduction strategies and a structured listening-speaking framework, we unlock enhanced problem-solving, stress reduction, and lay the groundwork for skillful conflict solving.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn to identify effective and ineffective listening styles and change how you listen to improve communication

  • Understand how defensiveness links to fight, flight and freeze states and how this impacts our ability to connect and communicate effectively with others

  • Review the four step NVC / mindful communication process of observing; naming feelings; translating feelings to needs; and making concrete requests to get needs met.
